Live Review: The Sounds
Glasgow’s Classic Grand may not have been packed to the rafters on Sunday evening, but in the words of The Sounds’ front woman Maja Ivarsson, the fans who did make it out on this chilly school night were so “hardcore” that she could easily have been in a sold-out stadium.
Rocking an Americana look that Ke$ha would be proud of, Maja worked up the crowd with the short and sweet It’s So Easy, from the band’s latest album Something To Die For. Dance With Me picked up the tempo, and took us on an acid trip down The Sounds Lane, all the way back to 2002 debut album Living In America.
By the time the Swedish fivesome hit the mid-section of their setlist, the lively crowd were eating from the palm of Maja’s perfectly formed paw, and I definitely have a new girl crush! Anthems like Song With A Mission and Painted By Numbers had everyone singing along, while Night After Night provided a rare moment of reflection amoungst this synth-pop showcase, magnifying our heroine’s flawless vocals and the songwriting talents of the band as a whole.
In today’s autotuned X Factor generation these skills are all too rarely recognised. I love the likes of JLS as much as the next gal, but these guys are in an entirely different league, which is why I was a little saddened by the small (yet mighty) crowd.
Tony The Beat and Hope You’re Happy Now ended the show on a high and left Glasgow more than happy with their Swedish Sunday.
